Hemlock Grove [5 out of 5]

True to my unfortunate affinity for fictional supernatural shows, watching the entire season 1 of Hemlock Grove back to back was inevitable. It’s up to 3 seasons now. I am wondering how this show got passed my radar. It’s pretty f*ckin’ good. The characters are all delightfully complex and the storyline pretty intense. Although I have to admit, if I were to overly simplify the storyline, it is the standard tale of two people from two walks of supernatural life by chance (not really at all by chance of course) finding each other, hating each other, grow affection for each other and THEN hating each other again. But hey, standard or not, it’s a tried and tested basic storyline and it definitely doesn’t disappoint. Overall, thumbs up. Really good special effects too! One of the best I’ve seen (and I’ve seen a lot). Hemlock Grove, you’ve placed a very hard yardstick for other supernatural shows to contend!

I’m a 1985 baby and generally, I’ve grown out of teen/college TV flicks. I’m more ‘The Originals’ and less ‘The Vampire Diaries’. Scream Queens is SURPRISINGLY entertaining! There were countless ways how this show could be a major flop but they pulled it off. I can’t wrap my head around it either, but they somehow managed. Some bits are just insanely ridiculous, but in a very funny, very ‘Clueless meets Scary Movie’ way. Tons of references that most Millennials would find hard to appreciate as well – which really took me by surprise! Shame on me for my teen/college genre prejudice! Shame on me.

Unlike The Secret Circle or Witches of East End, Salem portrays witches as how (I feel) they truly are. The modern day witch is packaged a little too perfect. Everyone is strikingly good looking and oozes sex appeal. In Salem, you get a lil less sex appeal, and a lil more, let’s burn that ugly witch or drown her. Marginally less disturbing than Penny Dreadful. Just marginally. The opening credits by itself is seriously freaky and a very clear warning of what’s to come when you decide to embark on the journey to Salem. Bitchcraft indeed.

I was a fan from the get go. It had all the ingredients vital in a supernatural flick and surprisingly, they managed to mix in just the right amount of horror, humour and eye candy! Season 11 now and it’s still going strong. What else can I possibly say? The Winchesters just blow me away =) It’s been on 10 years now and I’m clearly very very loyal and attached to this dynamic supernatural ass kickin’ adik beradik duo. Plus, it’s not psychologically disturbing as lets say, Penny Dreadful, Salem or American Horror Story.

If you live alone and not partial to horror flicks, this probably isn’t the show for you. The storyline is pure genius though. The cast is amazing and I’m definitely hooked. Word of warning though, extremely disturbing content – both psychologically and visually disturbing. You WILL feel uncomfortable at certain points, even the most jaded or seasoned horror flick enthusiast would find themselves delightfully and adequately frightened. Eva Green can definitely play the character of Vanessa Ives perfectly. I’m not surprised if it was written specifically for her. She’s got dark, dirty, desirable and damned nailed down for sure.

American Horror Story [5 out of 5]

I think the actors (naming Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett and Denis O’Hare!) have loads of fun playing the vastly different roles given from season to season. Definitely a challenge! AHS seem to make evil, crazy, perversions and supposed deformities, beautiful. How behind every perversion and act of madness has a story and reasoning behind it, wether acceptable or not. You end up going through mental stockholm syndrome and end up attached and even root for the dark side. They even point out that the superficial good side actually house the most evil of evil, how even I guess the aunty next door holds a dark secret and hides behind a plastered fake smile. Denial is very powerful. Please watch. I also LOVE how strong female (over age 50) lead characters were created and emphasised. Definitely an age group least represented in TV and pop culture. There are a force to be reckoned with! Definitely something to aspire to.

Truly amazing. It didn’t hurt that season 1 starred Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson and Michelle Monaghan as well. Season 1’s plot was very heavy and on the scale of disturbing, I’d give it a 7.5 over 10. Not exactly the type of show you want to watch to lift your mood – might depend on the type of person you are. Love the opening credits! A work of art in my humble opinion. If you are into occults, visually disturbing imagery (with the added audio), strong heavy storyline and amazing actors – go for it! Although *sad trombone*, season 2 paled in comparison to season 1. Rather upsetting but hey, when you set the standard amazingly high from the get go..
