Vikings [5 out of 5]

Definitely one of my all time favourites! Nice to watch a history type series other than the usual The Tudors, The Borgias and even The White Queen. The White Queen, no contest is crazy awesome though, but yes once in awhile, a break from ‘ye olde english’ is good for the soul. Vikings gives you just that! Learned a lot actually about viking culture and history. Well, most likely not even 60% true but interesting nevertheless =) Gotta love Floki and Lagertha!

Good storyline. Nuff said. I am genuinely entertained! The row of perfect gladiator abs will distract you from the plot occasionally, but then you’d fall back down to earth when a character you like suddenly gets beaten to death. Very physically visual, a lil’ too much at times. Even if you live alone, you’d have that gut reflex to make sure your door’s locked. Lucy Lawless (a.k.a Xena, Warrior Princess) is in it too, and she rocks =)

Slow moving and disappointing. Could have been really good. The cliches were just too strong not to get annoyed. I’m not sure, I guess when you’ve watched a number of really good supernatural tv shows, your standards can be unreasonably high. Good family show I guess. It just couldn’t keep me interested.

Salem [5 out of 5]

Unlike The Secret Circle or Witches of East End, Salem portrays witches as how (I feel) they truly are. The modern day witch is packaged a little too perfect. Everyone is strikingly good looking and oozes sex appeal. In Salem, you get a lil less sex appeal, and a lil more, let’s burn that ugly witch or drown her. Marginally less disturbing than Penny Dreadful. Just marginally. The opening credits by itself is seriously freaky and a very clear warning of what’s to come when you decide to embark on the journey to Salem. Bitchcraft indeed.

If you live alone and not partial to horror flicks, this probably isn’t the show for you. The storyline is pure genius though. The cast is amazing and I’m definitely hooked. Word of warning though, extremely disturbing content – both psychologically and visually disturbing. You WILL feel uncomfortable at certain points, even the most jaded or seasoned horror flick enthusiast would find themselves delightfully and adequately frightened. Eva Green can definitely play the character of Vanessa Ives perfectly. I’m not surprised if it was written specifically for her. She’s got dark, dirty, desirable and damned nailed down for sure.

Has that ‘Gangs of New York’ feel. Perhaps it’s within the same historical timeline? But yes, on the other side of the globe. Cillian Murphy is more than enough reason for me to give the show a go, and surprisingly, I stayed till the very end for the storyline. Was not disappointed at all. Can’t wait for the next season to come out =)

Strong willed and strong headed female lead. She surprisingly managed to keep very calm, cool and composed in very mind boggling situations. As fictional drama goes, it’s flat out fiction but that’s alright. Bits of Scottish history as well, which is always interesting and evens out the fiction a lil’. Lots of men (not in tights) in kilts and that’s always a bonus! Men in kilts playing hockey too. Weirdest sentence I’ve ever had the pleasure of writing! It’s very addictive too. No way you can not watch the entire season 1 back to back. Cool soundtrack as well. Triple thumbs up. Very romantic too!

I binged watched Reign season 1 over a weekend. It felt like I had struck gold! Reign is similar to other ‘ye olde English’ dramas BUT it has a more modern ‘Sex and the City’ and ‘Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants’ twist to it – a combination, by itself is worthy of a peak =) The soundtrack is amazing. I can’t stress this enough. If you have even a smidgeon of a contemporary dance bone in your body, seek the album or playlist out on Spotify or Deezer. You WILL be inspired instantly! I have the APPRECIATION for contemporary dance – I can’t dance to save my life. On top of the folk-ish contemporary music, the costume design just blows me away. They somehow managed to beautifully marry our decades of timeline difference in terms of fashion! A lot of the dresses in the show can definitely be worn today – which blows me away for sure. Also, the cast. Bless the casting director. He/she got it nailed! Adelaide Kane, Toby Regbo, Torrance Coombs, Anna Popplewell (a.k.a Susan Pevensie) and Caitlyn Stasey (a.k.a Tomorrow, When The War Began lead actress) are all in my watch list. I see great things for these young actors and I’m looking forward to witnessing their acting career.
