Mr. Robot [5 out of 5]

Mr. Robot [5 out of 5]

30 minutes in, awesomeness? 5/5. I’ve been hearing on podcasts (mainly the nerdist) about this new TV series called Mr. Robot. First of all, anything with robot in it sounds cheesy and the Mr. on top of that – definitely a turn off. I’ve been watching AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire because I’ve been in love with Lee Pace since Pushing Daisies. In comparison to Halt and Catch Fire (a computer geek but awesome based TV series) Mr. Robot even just 30 minutes in, is way too AWESOME not to mention here. Fun bits? [1] the main star (think I saw him in the last twilight movie actually – which Lee Pace was also in) is not your average TV series joe [2] his image screams druggy pale genius which I have to say – is actually pretty hot! – since I have that similar druggy but in my case pimply vibe [3] makes me think about his perspective on society. things I didn’t really ponder about before. I guess I have thought about it in passing but for someone to clearly say it and in a form most approachable to me, I’m a bit mind fucked (in a good way) [4] also, I think the main star is Egyptian/Greek which is rather refreshing. Bottom line? Do watch. Good for those late popcorn blur nights OR in my case (since my work hours are different), super early 6am Monday mornings.

[1] new rather unique storyline – not the normal superhero type shows [2] makes you think – the show kinda has faith in our intellectual abilities to catch up and understand what’s happening [3] must’ve had difficult time shooting in different continents as the main characters are from different parts of the world – definitely something I can appreciate [4] it really strikes that emotional cord that TV shows as different as they come – sci fi, drama, comedy, action, indie – they are centered around the normal human conditions and issues. Worlds apart but sufferings and joys are essentially the same [5] first 3 episodes dreadfully slow moving but it picked up fast afters and just snowballed into more awesomeness [6] some bits were hard to followed because scenes jumped from continent to continent. In conclusion? I’m really looking forward to Season 2! The season finale got me in puddles of my own lonely tears and for a brief moment, all faith in the world, humanity and future – restored.
The Vampire Diaries [4.5 out of 5]

The Vampire Diaries [4.5 out of 5]

I’m a huge fan of The Originals, it turns out it’s actually a spin off of The Vampire Diaries, a show that’s been around since 2009. 7 seasons in in fact which is awesome for any TV show these days. The golden age of TV they say this past decade has been, but that means new shows starting constantly and then cancelled abruptly when it doesn’t do well. I am still mourning the loss of The Secret Circle. Back to TVD, it is surprisingly good. It started a year after Twillight (2008) came along. Vampirism went full fledge mainstream from thereon forth. Reluctant at first to watch TVD due to its tragic synopsis ‘A teenage girl is torn between two vampire brothers’, as I completed season 7’s finale, very clearly I’ve been converted and consider me now a huge fan. Similar to how I never got around to watching Teen Wolf as well though. I don’t think I was meant to be part of the demographic. But hey, maybe I should give it a shot? It could be another TVD. As work begins to get hectic, I seem to watch more Netflix. A direct correlation to my productivity surprisingly. So yes, give this show a shot. I’ve fallen in love with the Salvatore brothers. Dare I say almost as much as The Winchesters from good ol’ Supernatural. I love the cast of TVD, a good mix of personalities and age groups. Elena, the female lead is pretty kick ass as well. Good storyline. Fantastic soundtrack as well! Just as good as Reign and that says a lot! 4.5 out of 5.

Slightly mixed feelings about this Netflix series in particular. It’s rather unchartered territory for me. Mostly because of my inability to relate to being a first-generation American or a second-generation immigrant. Some parts of the series deal with really specific humour, which was lost on me unfortunately. ALTHOUGH, some bits are pretty funny! I LOVE Aziz Ansari’s parents in the show. I appreciate the plot and plight of a first-generation Asian American, being single in the big city and getting to know your parents better, but now as an adult. Aziz Ansari is a stand up comedian (he’s aaaiigghht) and had a really fun role in Parks & Recreation. Being a true Pawneean, I definitely had to watch this series.

Remember Golden Girls? Grace & Frankie is pretty much that, but on steroids. It’s the not so classic tale of two golden girls learning to cope with the loss of their husbands. The recent legislation on gay marriage apparently had inspired their closeted husbands to abandon the 40-50 year matrimonial ship and decided it was finally time to wed each other. This is the story of how two women, who generally hated each other in the past, learned that in the end, all hope was not lost when their marriages ended. How life did go on and move on, even at 70. Amazing cast of actors. They truly nailed it! Just the right amount of family chaos, the right amount of giggles and the right amount of hallucinogens =)

True to my unfortunate affinity for fictional supernatural shows, watching the entire season 1 of Hemlock Grove back to back was inevitable. It’s up to 3 seasons now. I am wondering how this show got passed my radar. It’s pretty f*ckin’ good. The characters are all delightfully complex and the storyline pretty intense. Although I have to admit, if I were to overly simplify the storyline, it is the standard tale of two people from two walks of supernatural life by chance (not really at all by chance of course) finding each other, hating each other, grow affection for each other and THEN hating each other again. But hey, standard or not, it’s a tried and tested basic storyline and it definitely doesn’t disappoint. Overall, thumbs up. Really good special effects too! One of the best I’ve seen (and I’ve seen a lot). Hemlock Grove, you’ve placed a very hard yardstick for other supernatural shows to contend!
