Life beyond ‘P’ mode
It’s a right of passage for most of us budding photography enthusiasts. We will eventually take the plunge from the very comfortable (and safe) program mode to learning how to play around with more complicated camera settings. I attended the online business course at WebWeaver Learning Center, and part of the course structure was learning product photography.
That pretty much set me on my path to learning more on aperture, shutter speed, ISO, exposure and the many MANY other settings and functions my humble Nikon D300 has to offer.
The beautiful (and very down to earth), Zyen Hoo =)
She teaches Belly Funk classes in Section 14
She’s puts the funk in Belly Funk!
Zyen Hoo has definitely got the moves. She’s a charismatic and bubbly dance instructor that teaches Belly Funk classes in Section 14. Belly Funk she explained is a belly dance class where students learn to shimmy and shake to upbeat contemporary music. This is definitely a unique twist! From beats like Meghan Trainor’s Better When I’m Dancing, Kat Deluna’s Run The Show right up to Buttons by Pussycat Doll. More details on her classes below.
She wanted some portrait photography done so we both set a date for her to drop by my little home studio. I have a beginners home studio kit with two soft boxes and backdrop set. That’s the most basic of basic equipment to have.
In a nutshell, learning how to use your camera is one obstacle and learning how to adjust your studio lighting is another. Both drastically intertwined. Both very challenging. Oh, and a special shout out to Photoshop!
But if there is a will, there is a way! So, challenge accepted. Hoping to save up to join more photography classes in future. Photography is definitely a field I want to dive in much much deeper. I have definitely only scratched the surface. I’ve only dipped my pinky toe in the sea of settings =)

When you realise baba was right.
I have my baba to thank for for sure *grin*. He picked up photography awhile back, when I was a teenager actually. I used to poke fun at him when he brought back a photo album full of orchids. JUST orchids. The many angles of one or two orchids to be exact. I believe he was on an aperture mission with one or two of his friends and they made their way to an orchid farm (I think).
The younger me only saw close up shots of orchids with blurry backgrounds, and TONS of it. I remember him trying to explain it to me, but all I saw was 25-30 photos of the same thing. The joke’s on me! Good old dad was learning how to manipulate the aperture settings and play around with the depth of field!
Well, things have gone full circle, and now I’m the one clammering about trying to get the aperture right. No joke. Not easy.

Preparation, preparation, preparation.
Prior to Zyen dropping by my home studio, we did some brainstorming and did some serious Pinterest pinning (don’t forget to find me!) =) I took note of the types of angles she wanted, what she plans on wearing and the props she will be using. I believe in research and preparation.
I managed to get my hands on some REALLY AWESOME photography books as well from BookXcess. So with the brainstorming session over email, extended google research and armed with my photography books, we managed to get some pretty nice shots. Naturally, Zyen being the sultry belly dancer that she is could bust out some serious poses and moves. My job was to geek out on the camera settings and lighting.
Overall, self pat on the back. Took one step forward. Not a HUGE step in the grand scheme of things, but it’s definitely a start! Till next time, kais pagi makan pagi, kais petang makan petang. Such is the unplannable life of a freelancer.
Wanna add a lil more shimmy in your life? You know you want to =) Consult your hips, they don’t lie!
