I’m not a fan of horror flicks (for very valid sanity reasons) but this was pretty good. Sorta in between Blair Witch Project and … actually I can’t really say. For me, Blair Witch Project was crazy mind boggling scary – compared to that – The Lazarus Project wasn’t so bad. I think I fell into the Olivia Wilde trap PLUS Donald Glover (from Community) was in it. In short, don’t watch it alone at night. Just enough scary for horror flick averse movie goers. Recommend it for movie nights in with microwave popcorn or in my case – chocolate.

First of all, I am incredibly biased because James McAvoy plays the lead. We all know how the novel by Mary Shelley goes. It’s been ingrained in our minds the imagery of the evil ‘made by Hollywood’ mad scientist bringing to life the undead, followed by manic evil “It’s alive. It’s ALIVE!” shrieking. The novel however, I believe was written from the perspective of the creature. All in all, it’s a sad tale of trying to right (in his mind) a wrong. The inability to forget and forgive an unfortunate past and followed by the inevitable descend into madness because of it. Seeking redemption in all the wrong scientific ways. One thing for sure, James McAvoy makes madness forgivable and desperation endearing. Worthy of strong mention, Mr Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe. He is flourishing for sure! I loved him in Kill Your Darlings (2013). For some reason IMDB rated this movie ONLY 6/10. My biased, ferociously loyal mind naturally refuses to acknowledge any flaws in the movie. 5 out of 5. 5 out of 5.

Charlize Theron (I adored from the very start in The Astronauts Wife and also Aeon Flux) turns out also produced the movie. She did an impeccable job as usual. She saved the film for sure! It didn’t hurt that Nicholas Hoult (the beast from X Men) and Chloe Grace Moretz (natural born kick ass babe and killer beauty) was in it too. The Dark Places (2015) soundtrack was awesome as well! It was eerie and totally created the mood for the storyline and plot twists. Unfortunately forgettable film BUT does reconfirm how humans, when pushed agains’t a tight corner by default shows their true colours or true strength. Also how, despite best intentions, can still **ck things up. I don’t think cruel people actually know that they are cruel (unless you are a psychopath and feel nothing). Not all things done out of love are right. Nothin’ much else to say really. It’s a good psychological thriller. Good for a brief retreat.
